Air Transportation:

Air transportation is a crucial mode of transport in the Sultanate of Oman, supported by a network of modern airports serving both domestic and international flights. This network includes Muscat International Airport, the country's primary airport, as well as other significant airports such as Salalah, Sohar, and Duqm. These airports play a vital role in bolstering the country’s economic and tourism activities while enhancing connectivity with the global community.
The aviation sector, through these facilities and services, aims to support tourism by focusing on attracting international tourists and positioning Oman as a premier global travel destination.

  • Muscat International Airport:

Officially opened in 1973, Muscat International Airport has undergone numerous improvements and developments to accommodate the increasing demand for travel, tourism, and connectivity between Oman and various countries. The most notable advancement in 2018 was the inauguration of the new passenger terminal, which began operations in March 2018. This terminal has an initial annual capacity of up to 20 million passengers.

  • Salalah Airport:

The new Salalah Airport features a main runway of 4 km in length and 75 meters in width, capable of accommodating all types and the latest aircraft. It is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and automatic landing systems according to international standards. The airport includes a passenger terminal with a capacity of up to 2 million passengers annually and a high-tech control tower. Additionally, the airport boasts 27 new buildings. Salalah International Airport is the second busiest airport in Oman, benefiting from the city’s growing popularity among tourists and the expansion of the port and industrial capacities. In 2022, the airport served approximately 433,000 passengers and handled around 5,868 international flights.

  • Sohar Airport:

Sohar Airport, an addition to Oman’s new airports, commenced operations for limited domestic flights in November 2014. It became the country’s third international airport with the launch of flights to the UAE and Qatar in the third quarter of 2017. Located near Sohar Port and serving a densely populated industrial area, the airport has recently opened a new passenger terminal and a dedicated cargo building. Upon full operation, it will handle approximately 250,000 passengers and 50,000 tons of air cargo annually. In 2022, Sohar Airport received 76,000 passengers.

  • Duqm Airport:

Situated 14 km from the city of Duqm, this airport can currently accommodate up to half a million passengers, with future expansion plans to reach 2 million annually. It covers over 273,000 square meters, features a 4 km runway, and has parking for four aircraft, including the Airbus A380. The airport is designed to support the commercial and economic activity of the Duqm Special Economic Zone. Since its opening in July 2014, Duqm International Airport has seen increased passenger traffic, reflecting the development of Duqm Port, the free zone, and associated industries. A new terminal opened in September 2018 is expected to add capacity for an additional 500,000 passengers annually. In 2022, the airport served approximately 67,500 passengers.
